Avast has been in operation for 30 years and claims to secure 435 million devices worldwide with its award-winning security software for cyberspace. Avast’s free software offers limited capabilities. However, its premium products, such as Avast Ultimate are quite comprehensive. The suite includes antivirus software, VPN services, password managers and Cleanup tools to help users manage their passwords, remain secure online, and improve their device.

Avast Ultimate is a basic interface that clearly delineates the tools it offers. Its malware engine performed well in independent lab testing, detecting numerous threats that are typically not detected by other protections. Its web security feature is very effective, finding phishing sites that are not caught by Chrome or Firefox’s default security features.

Other tools include an app lock, RAM boost and an internet scanner that checks for security holes. Its ransomware guard prevents third-party software from changing the way you access, delete or lock your files until you pay a price. The program also provides mobile applications for Android and iOS. Apple’s restrictions have created an Android version more feature-rich, however both versions have key security features, including malware scanning and web coverage.

Avast’s biggest flaw is that it collects and transmits your personal information to its analytics company, Jumpshot. This was discovered in a PCMag and Motherboard investigation in 2020. This feature can be disabled by going to the settings menu. If you’re still worried, Avast allows you to choose a password which you must enter before the software is able to share your IP address and other details with third parties.
